Becoming a Carer Friendly School

At least 1 in 11 young people in Australia have some level of responsibility as a carer in their home. This equates to there being, on average, 3-5 young carers in every classroom in Australia.

That’s why taking a whole school or organisation approach will be the most effective when supporting young carers and their families; this includes acknowledging and supporting young carers in policies, intake processes and guidelines for deadlines and assessments.

Here are some ways you can become a Carer Friendly School:

  • Invite Carers WA Young Carer team for free staff training or a student services information session (complete the online form below).
  • Increase awareness in the school community by:
  • Have a designated staff person or people that periodically and discreetly check in with known young carers (even those who do not access support or services generally appreciate being acknowledged).
  • Obtain school leadership support  for acknowledging and supporting young carers to remain engaged in their education.
  • Include a question in enrolment forms about anyone in student households that has additional needs so the designated staff person knows who to check-in with.
  • For young carers who are anxious about the person they are caring for, arrange a safe check-in time or place to reduce non-compliance with school mobile policies.
  • Where appropriate and if willing, refer young people and families to Carers WA or other relevant services.
  • Address young carers in attendance or bullying polices so that students and families know they can be supported.
  • Provide flexibility in assessments and timetables where possible.
  • Create a peer support space for respite and skill building.
