Rae’s Journey Nurturing her Daughter’s Wellbeing and Finding Her Own

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, we’re honoured to share the inspiring story of Rae, who has devoted over 50 years to caring for her daughter, while also learning to take care of herself.

For Rae, caring for her daughter has been both complex and rewarding.

Her journey into caring began in 1972 when her daughter was born with a congenital condition called De Georges syndrome.

What started as being a parent with a child needing extra care soon became a full-time role filled with hospital visits and surgeries throughout the first decade. As her daughter reached her twenties, Rae faced another challenge when schizophrenia, a symptom of her daughter’s syndrome, emerged.

Today, Rae’s daily routine revolves around supporting her daughter in various aspects of life: from daily preparations to managing medications and medical appointments, overseeing banking and NDIS coordination, and monitoring her daughter’s mental health.

The complexities of mental health and maintaining relationships have been the most demanding aspects of Rae’s caring role thus far.

Rae found Carers WA initially through a friend who invited her to join. She has since been supported through workshops, learning essential skills and connecting with others in a similar situation.

“Carers WA have supported me in developing skills and knowledge vital to caring. Networking with other carers helped me to feel less isolated. I am now a Carer’s representative and find ongoing workshops invaluable to my personal development”

Self care forms an important part of Rae’s life, crediting Carers WA with teaching her to take time for herself and appreciate her own personal value. Rae encourages others in similar positions to embrace their own wellbeing and retain a sense of hope.

“Self-care is vital in maintaining your caring role. Appreciate yourself and how important your role is. Try to be positive and appreciate the beauty of the world around you and smile even when you are feeling down as it will be reflected back to you and lift your spirits”

Rae is passionate about personal development and looks forward to continuing her work with Carers WA through their workshops as she helps advocate for others who find themselves in a similar situation.
