Event Ideas for Your Organisation This Carers Week 2024

National Carers Week, an annual week of recognition taking place from 13th to 19th October 2024, is a momentous occasion dedicated to honouring the selfless contributions of unpaid family carers across Australia. These remarkable individuals provide crucial support to those with disability, chronic illnesses, mental health issues, or drug-related problems, often without any formal recognition.

Carers WA, as the peak body representing carers in Western Australia, is championing the week by providing Community Activity Grants.

The grants are open to not-for-profit organisations and community groups. Ranging from $500 to $800 (excluding GST), the grants are aimed at funding local events or activities during National Carers Week. The objectives of the Carers Week Activity Grants will be to engage, inform and celebrate collaboratively with unpaid carers in the local community. Applications from regional or remote organisations and those assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander or culturally and linguistically diverse carers are particularly encouraged.

Here are a few ideas about how a Community Activity Grant can help you celebrate this Carers Week.

  1. Carers’ Wellness Day: Host a day dedicated to the wellness of carers, offering activities like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness workshops. You could also invite a local nutritionist to give a talk on healthy eating. The grant could be used for hiring professionals, providing healthy snacks, and creating a relaxing atmosphere.
  1. Carers’ Appreciation Luncheon: Arrange a special luncheon to honour the carers in your community. You could use the grant money to cater food from a local restaurant or café. You could also have guest speakers who can share their experiences and provide valuable information to the carers.
  1. Art Therapy Workshop: Organise a workshop where carers can express their feelings through art. Hire a local artist or art therapist to guide the session. The grant could cover art supplies and refreshments.
  1. Outdoor Adventure: Plan a day trip to a local nature reserve or park. This can provide a refreshing break for carers. The grant could be used for transportation, picnic food, and possibly a guided tour.
  1. Skill Building Workshop: Arrange a workshop that can help carers build new skills or hobbies. This could be anything from cooking classes to first aid training. The grant could be used to pay for the instructor and any necessary materials.
  1. Movie Night: Rent a local venue and host a movie night for carers. The grant could be used for the movie rental, snacks, and drinks.
  1. Morning or Afternoon Tea: Organise a casual gathering where carers can enjoy morning or afternoon tea, providing an opportunity for social interaction and relaxation. The grant could be used for the venue hire and catering.

Remember, whatever activity you choose, ensure it is accessible and inclusive for all carers in your community.

The Carers WA Community Activity Grants are supported by Lotterywest. Lotterywest is unique, being the only lottery in Australia, and one of the few in the world, where the profits are returned back to the local community.
